The South Korean government apparently intends to proceed with its proposal to begin scientific whaling next year. The country also has the highest incidence of reported illegal whaling in the world. Animals caught as bycatch are sold there for their meat and ultimately, those profits drive this deceitful practice. Furthermore, the minke whales killed by South Korea are part of an endangered population. Experts say that if current catch levels remain as they are, this population will continue to decline.
